Finale – Prisoners of Love: Wednesday Read-ins

Wednesday 23 September from 17 to 18 hours

Lecture

To mark the end of the exhibition Prisoners of Love: Until the Sun of Freedom, we are organising three joint reading sessions. We will delve into the sources and texts that artists Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme collected whilst creating their work.

Syllabus

Basel and Ruanne have been collaborating since 2007, exploring the political and poetic dimensions of anti-colonial resistance. Research and collective learning form an important part of their practice. For their research, they compiled a syllabus featuring texts by thinkers, writers and artists who have influenced their work.

Themes

During the sessions, you will read texts by, amongst others, Walid Daqqa, June Jordan, Nasser Abourahme and Hiba Abu Nada, exploring themes such as poetry, testimony, resistance and liberation.

Keynote

The series concludes on 23 September with a special open reading session. You will read texts that were not covered previously, or that have emerged from the discussions. This will be followed by a keynote address by writer, translator and publisher Hazem Jamjoum.

Practical information

You do not need to have read the texts in advance, and you are welcome to join or leave at any time. The sessions are in English and are facilitated by Aïda Sidhoum, Assistant Curator at Kunstinstituut Melly.
