Mummy portrait of a girl     Painting on wood, Egypt, c. AD 50-100     Allard Pierson

Mummified

This young girl died in Roman Egypt. The family had her body mummified and left it in the house for some time before it was buried. She looks very much alive in this portrait on a wooden panel that was wound into the mummy windings. Her wreath of gold leaves symbolises good luck and divine protection on her journey to the afterlife.
