Resistance through Word, Dance, and Sound

During this afternoon, we will explore how English-language Caribbean literature — alongside other storytelling forms such as music, oral traditions, and dance — contributes to remembering and reinterpreting the Dutch colonial past.

Through a performance on the apintidrum, a lecture by Thalia Ostendorf, and an interactive dance workshop led by Rohiet Tjon Poen Gie, we will bring together diverse forms of resistance.

The program will conclude with a reflection by the writers of Hidden Pages, Susi and Simba Mosis, followed by a reception with bites provided by Tjin’s Toko.

The program will be conducted in English. Everyone interested in literature, heritage, and the Caribbean diaspora is warmly invited!

• 13:10 – 13:25 Opening Performance: Apintidrum Live musical performance and an explanation of the apintidrum as a form of cultural resistance.
• 13:25 – 13:30 Introduction to Thalia Ostendorf's Lecture Brief introduction to the work of Thalia Ostendorf.
• 13:30 – 14:10 Lecture by Thalia Ostendorf Exploring how English-language Caribbean literature reinterprets the Dutch colonial history, followed by a Q&A session.
• 14:10 – 14:25 Break Refreshments and informal discussions.
• 14:25 – 15:00 Workshop: Hidden Pages – Dance & Storytelling Led by Rohiet Tjon Poen Gie. Dance interpretation of Caribbean audio fragments with interactive group reflection.
• 15:00 – 15:10 Closing & Reflection By Susi and Simba: thoughts on resistance, strength, and heritage.
• 15:15 – 16:00 Reception Enjoy Surinamese snacks from Tjin’s Toko, offering a colonial twist on Caribbean flavors.
