Tapestries

The 6 famous Zeeland tapestries tell about the struggle of the Zeelanders against the Spaniards in the Eighty Years War. This unique series was commisioned by the States of Zeeland between 1593 and 1604.

Bursting with stories

Burning ships, strong defences and officers fleeing on a sandbank can all be found on the 6 tapestries of the Zeeuws Museum. It depicts 6 moments from the Eighty Years War. Each carpet is rich in detail and bursting with stories.

Naval battles

4 weavers were commisioned by the States General to make the carpets. They served to retain the heat, keep out the draft and impress the other states. Various naval battles can be seen on the carpets. The most important message that the images want to convey is: not the Dutch but the Zeelanders drove out the Spaniards!
