Discover the first major retrospective exhibition of South Korean artist Haegue Yang (1971, Seoul) in the Kunsthal in the Netherlands.

Transformation

The exhibition Leap Year presents a versatile overview of Yang's thirty-year career, featuring a wide range of installations, sculptures, videos, and audio works. She transforms everyday objects, like drying racks, into human-like creatures in acrobatic poses, brings blinds to life with theatrical lights, and creates stimulating sound experiences with resonating metal bells.

Beauty in the Everyday

In her work, Yang emphasizes how movement, feelings, and emotions are experienced differently across cultures. She uses light, sound, vapor, heat, and scent to evoke memories and associations. Yang’s art invites reflection on the beauty of the everyday, while also encouraging thought on complex cultural, societal, and emotional themes.

Crafts and Rituals

Yang draws inspiration from crafts and rituals, ranging from European pagan ceremonies to shamanistic practices. She delves into techniques of marginalized communities, such as weaving, knotting, crocheting, and paper cutting, incorporating them into her art. For example, she created her colorful rattan sculptures, The Randing Intermediates (2020), in collaboration with artisans in the Philippines. These organic shapes resemble sea creatures but are executed with industrial techniques. Expertly crafted from diverse materials full of intricate details, Yang’s works subtly provoke thought.
