The 18th-century garden house at Huis Marseille     Historic garden house restored

Reconstructed

In the garden of Huis Marseille stands a reconstructed 18th-century garden house. The original building had fallen into such severe disrepair by the 1960s that it had to be demolished.

Restoration

During the restoration of Huis Marseille at the end of the 20th century, several remains of the garden house were discovered, including parts of the floor, the natural stone door plinths, and fragments of the rear façade. Combined with historical photographs and architectural records, these findings made an accurate reconstruction possible.

Rebuilt

The garden house was rebuilt in 2003 and has since once again formed an important part of the historic canal garden. The reconstruction contributes to the preservation of the historic character of Huis Marseille, which is housed in two interconnected 17th-century canal houses on the Keizersgracht.
