How to make your Museum Pass digital

Need help?

  • Download the Museumkaart app from the App Store (for iPhone) or the Google Play Store (for Android), scan your physical Museumkaart in the app and follow the activation steps in the confirmation email. You will receive an activation email that allows you to convert your Museumkaart into a digital version.

  • The digital Museumkaart is always at hand, more environmentally friendly (less plastic), and allows for faster renewal. You no longer need to carry a physical card when visiting museums.

  • The digital Museumkaart is available exclusively in the Museumkaart app. Have you converted your physical card to a digital version, or opted for a digital version when you purchased it? If so, you’ll only find it in the app. Download the Museumkaart app from the App Store (for iPhone) or the Google Play Store (for Android).

Please note: the card you see in My Museum Pass is not a valid admission ticket. Museums will only grant entry if they can scan the coloured, digital Museumkaart with a barcode in the app.

Download the Museumkaart app and activate your card within it before your museum visit.

  • No, once you switch to the digital Museumkaart, the physical card is no longer valid. You can choose to use either a physical or a digital card. Because the Museumkaart is personal, this system helps ensure that everyone uses their card as intended: for themselves, and not for someone else. That’s fair to other cardholders — and to the museums.

Would you like to receive a physical card again after going digital? You can request one from us for €4.95.

  • The digital Museumkaart is an alternative to the physical card. It is up to the user to choose between these options. The Museumkaart is personalised and cannot be transferred to others. To prevent misuse, it is unfortunately not possible to use both options at the same time. The option to have the Museumkaart as a physical card remains available. However, the digital option offers additional benefits, such as details of current exhibitions and an overview of all participating museums.

  • Access will only be granted if you can show your digital Museumkaart in the Museumkaart app. Make sure your Museumkaart is active on your own phone.

You need the Museumkaart to gain entry to museums. If you’ve forgotten your card (physical or digital), you’ll have to buy a separate admission ticket. The cost of this cannot be refunded.

  • Here’s how it works:

    1. Download the Museumkaart app onto your new phone via the App Store (for iPhone) or the Play Store (for Android)
    2. Log in to My Museumkaart and request an activation link; you’ll receive this by email
    3. Open the email on your new phone and click on the link. Or scan the QR code in the email using the app
  • The app works on smartphones with Android 9+ and iOS 16+. Currently the app does not work on a device without Google Play Services, such as the Fairphone with e/OS. Check if your device is compatible before downloading the app.

  • Sometimes your valid card may not display correctly in the app. In the latest iOS update (version 1.1.5), you can now easily fix this yourself. Simply go through the one-time activation step via email, allowing the app to confirm that the card belongs to you. After that, your card will function as usual.

  • An adult Museumkaart can only be linked to one device at a time. If you change devices, you can transfer the card to your new device. This can only be done a limited number of times per year. If you change devices too often, you will not be able to transfer your Museumkaart manually and will need to contact our customer service team.

The Museumkidskaart (for children up to and including 12 years old) can be used on up to two devices at the same time. You can read here how to set up the Museumkidskaart on two devices.

  • Yes, you can temporarily share the digital Museumkidskaart with another accompanying adult, such as a grandparent or a friend. The card can be active on up to two devices at the same time. The other accompanying adult will need to have the Museumkaart app on their phone.

You can request an activation link via Mijn Museumkaart and forward it to the accompanying adult. They can then activate the card in the app.

You can find all the steps on this instructions page.

  • It is possible to change the photo on your digital Museumkaart, but this cannot be done via the app or your account. To do so, please contact customer services. They will be able to assess whether the photo can be changed and arrange this for you.

Please note: a photo can be changed no more than once a year. This is a security measure to prevent misuse of the Museum Card.

  • Even for a digital Museum Pass, we ask for your address to assist you as best as possible. We need your address to send important messages, generate invoices if required, and provide extra protection against misuse of your Museum Pass.

  • The Museumkaart attaches great importance to the security of its cardholders’ data. For this reason, it has opted for its own system, which ensures that users’ data is not passed on to third parties. In addition, the Museumkaart app offers additional benefits that are not possible with a digital wallet.

  • No, the digital Museumkaart is only available for residents of the European Union. The Museumkaart app, which is required to activate and use the pass, cannot be downloaded outside the EU. If you are visiting the Netherlands, you can buy a temporary Museumkaart at a museum, which grants access to 5 museum visits.

  • Direct debit is a payment method whereby you give Stichting Museumkaart one-off authorisation to automatically debit your bank account each year. This standing authorisation remains in force until you revoke it. You will be notified before the payment is taken.

  • Unfortunately, due to a technical change, the link in your email may no longer work. Don’t worry – you can still authorise automatic renewal via your My Museumkaart account. Here’s how:

    1. Log in to My Museumkaart
    2. Click on ‘My details’
    3. Select ‘Change payment method’
    4. Select ‘Automatic renewal’
    5. Authorise the payment via your bank

Please note: If you authorise the payment within 10 days of receiving the email, your next renewal will already be processed automatically. Have you already received a payment request via iDEAL? If so, please pay via iDEAL first. Your next renewal will then be processed automatically by direct debit.

  • You can provide authorization through our website when making a new purchase or when you're about to renew your Museumkaart. Please note: this can only be done via computer, not mobile. You'll receive an email with a link to confirm the authorization. Once approved, your Museumkaart renewal will be paid automatically each year (renewal fee € 69,-). Well before your card expires, you'll receive an email with information about the upcoming direct debit.

No worries about unexpected costs: well before your card expires, you'll receive a personal email informing you about the upcoming direct debit. This way, you'll know exactly when and how much will be deducted.

  • Direct debit works with major Dutch banks, including ABN AMRO, Rabobank, ING, Triodos Bank, ASN Bank, RegioBank, and SNS Bank. Customers of Van Lanschot & Kempen and Bunq pay their renewal via iDEAL.

Are you having trouble setting up a direct debit through your bank? If so, please contact your bank for more information.

  • With direct debit, you're assured of a continuously valid Museumkaart without any hassle. You no longer need to pay manually and never miss a renewal. Well before your card expires, you'll receive an email with information about the upcoming direct debit (renewal fee € 69,-).

  • Absolutely! You can cancel your continuous direct debit whenever you want. It's this simple: log in to My Museumkaart, go to My details and click on Change payment method. There, choose Pay for 1 year. By selecting this option, you stop the automatic direct debit. Your Museumkaart will no longer be automatically renewed. Don't worry: you'll still receive a renewal offer with a discount. If you don't respond to this, your subscription will simply end after the expiry date of your Museumkaart. Can't figure it out? Feel free to contact our customer service. We're happy to help!

  • Initially, you provide authorization for all cards in your name. If you want direct debit for just one card, you can adjust this in My Museumkaart.

  • All payment details and the status of your direct debit can be found in My Museumkaart.

  • It is indeed possible to still receive a renewal offer with an iDEAL link after you have set up a direct debit. This happens if you only set up the direct debit after 10 days. This is because the renewal offer with direct debit is only valid for 10 days.

In this case, your direct debit authorisation will no longer apply to the current renewal, but will only be used next year. For now, you can simply renew your Museumkaart via the iDEAL link you have received. Don’t worry: next year, your Museumkaart will be automatically renewed via the direct debit authorisation you have already set up.

  • Log in to My Museumkaart to check your card’s validity and renew it if necessary.

Please note: your Museumkaart is valid “until” a specific date, not “until and including.” Make sure to check carefully whether your card is still valid on the day you plan to visit a museum.

  • No worries! You can choose from the following two options:

    1. Simply request a duplicate via the contact form. Choose the subject Replace (current) Museumkaart, provide your Museumkaart number and complete your request. Once the duplicate request is processed, you'll receive a confirmation and a payment link. The cost for a duplicate is €4.95.
    2. Make your Museumkaart digital: log in to My Museumkaart, choose Self-service in the left menu, select the option Request activation link for digital card and follow the steps. When your Museumkaart is digital, you'll always have it at hand on your phone. Your physical Museumkaart will then no longer be valid.

Have you recently purchased your Museumkaart but not received it? Report this within 6 weeks of purchase via our customer service. You will then receive a new card free of charge.

  • A photo of your Museumkaart is not a valid admission ticket. But good news! You can now visit museums with a digital Museumkaart. Via the Museumkaart app, you can show your Museumkaart digitally at the museum entrance. The Museumkaart remains strictly personal, whether you use the physical or digital version. Learn here how the digital Museumkaart works.

  • You can easily update your address by logging in to My Museumkaart. Please ensure you update your address in good time so that your renewal or new Museumkaart is sent to the correct address.

Having trouble logging in? Set a new password using the Forgotten password option. If this doesn’t work and your email address isn’t recognised, please contact customer services.

  • You need the Museumkaart to enter museums. If you forget your card, you must purchase a separate entry ticket. These costs cannot be reimbursed. You can also digitize your Museumkaart, so you always have it on your phone!

  • You must register your temporary card within 31 days to receive a permanent Museumkaart. Missed the deadline? No worries—register your card via museumkaart.nl, and you will receive your permanent card to continue visiting museums.

  • For most museums, reservations are not required. However, some museums still use time slots. Check the museum’s website in advance to avoid disappointment.

  • You will automatically receive a notification from us (by email or post) 4 to 5 weeks before your Museumkaart expires. From that moment, you can renew it via My Museumkaart.

    1. Log in to My Museumkaart
    2. Select the cards you want to renew
    3. Complete your payment via iDEAL or the QR code linked to your renewal
    4. Do you have multiple cards? You can choose which ones to renew.

After renewal, your current Museumkaart will remain valid until the new expiration date. You will not receive a new pass.

  • If your card expires within a month, you will always receive a renewal notification. Check your spam folder or add service@e.museumkaart.nl to your safe senders list. Still can't find the notification or having trouble renewing? Contact our customer service—we’re happy to help.

  • Sometimes it takes a little while before your renewal appears in the app. This usually happens because the app is still showing old information. You can fix this by refreshing the app or restarting it completely.

Still not showing? Please check your internet connection. With a slow connection it may take a bit longer for the data to update.

  • Paying with a QR code is easy and secure:

    1. Open your phone’s camera and scan the QR code (do not use your banking app)
    2. You will be directed to the iDEAL payment process
    3. Check the details and confirm your payment

Does your phone not have a QR scanning function? Download a QR scan app from the App Store or Google Play.

  • With the Gift Museumkaart, you can give the Museumkaart as a gift! The recipient receives a gift code to order a Museumkaart for free. The gift code is valid for 24 months after purchase. Once the recipient redeems it, the Museumkaart is valid for one year.

  • You can order the Gift Museumkaart via our website. At the moment, the Gift Museumkaart is not available for purchase in museums.

  • How you redeem the Gift Museumkaart depends on your situation.

I don’t have a My Museumkaart account yet.

    1. Go to this page
    2. Enter your gift code to redeem the Museumkaart

I already have a My Museumkaart account and want to register and manage the Gift Museumkaart within that account.

    1. Log in to My Museumkaart
    2. Select the option ‘Add another Museumkaart’
    3. Select the option ‘Register a gift card’ and follow the steps

Please note: redeem your gift code within 24 months of purchase.

  • Do you already have a Museumkaart and have you been given a Gift Museumkaart as a present? If so, keep the gift code until your current Museumkaart is about to expire.

You cannot use a Gift Museumkaart to renew your current Museumkaart. You should use the gift code to apply for a new Museumkaart as soon as your current card is about to expire.

Please note: as soon as you register the gift code, the new Museum Card will take effect immediately. Therefore, do not register the code too early. We recommend doing this approximately 7 days before your current Museum Card expires.

    1. Log in to My Museumkaart
    2. Click on Add card
    3. Enter the gift code and order your new Museumkaart

Do not use the gift code straight away after receiving it if your current Museumkaart is still valid for several months. Otherwise, part of the validity period will be lost.

  • After ordering via our website, you will receive the Gift Museumkaart at home within 5 to 8 working days. During busy periods, delivery may take 2 to 3 weeks. Order in advance to ensure your gift arrives on time.

  • No, the Gift Museumkaart itself is not a valid admission ticket. The recipient must first redeem the gift code to order a Museumkaart.

  • We use your (email) address to keep you informed on behalf of the Museumkaart, for example, to send you your permanent card or inform you about interesting offers. If you have given permission, you will also receive our monthly Museum Tips newsletter. Want to know exactly how we handle your data? Check out our privacy statement.

  • When your Museumkaart expires, we send up to three renewal requests. If you don’t respond, we consider this a cancellation and stop sending further messages.

However, you may still be subscribed to our newsletter. If you no longer wish to receive it, simply click Unsubscribe at the bottom of the newsletter.

  • We keep your data as long as you are a Museumkaart holder or subscribed to our newsletter. After that, we delete your data within one year of your pass expiring (if you don’t purchase a new one) or after you unsubscribe from the newsletter.

  • Would you like your data to be deleted from the Museumkaart system? Contact our customer service team via email or phone. We will send a form to your registered address. Sign and return it, and we will delete your data as soon as possible. Please note that some data, such as financial records, must legally be kept for seven years.

  • If you receive emails or letters that seem suspicious or you have doubts about their authenticity, please contact our customer service team. We’re happy to assist you!
