The Nature of Remembering

Entities

The title of the exhibition has two meanings: on the one hand, it evokes nature, focusing on agents and actors outside and alongside humankind – living entities that bear witness to, participate in, refer to, reflect on, predict and haunt historical time. On the other hand, the expression ‘the nature of’ is a provocation, challenging ideological and forcibly imposed notions of remembrance and commemoration.

Frictioning

All these projects share a common aim of ‘frictioning’: using technologies against their colonial nature and reflecting on the affective, ancestral, archival and forensic interweaving of lived experience and knowledge production. Collectively, the works ask: who or what frames and animates commemorations of violence – acts that have been rendered invisible, unspeakable and unthinkable?
