On 9 April 1989, the Soviet army put down a peaceful student demonstration in Tbilisi. It resulted in many deaths and injuries. Since then, tulips are a symbol of resistance to Russian imperialism. 36 years later, Ketuta Alexi-Meskhishvili presents the exhibition making food out of sunlight.

Art as form of resistance

Ketuta Alexi-Meskhishvili's work consists of analogue photographs, film, and dye-sublimation prints; a printing technique where ink is absorbed into the material by heat. Her work examines the role of art as a form of resistance. She reflects on the power of image and memory in times of oppression.

Floral works

In het exhibition, which can be visited in the freely accessible space The Eye, Alexi-Meskhishvili emphasises her floral works. For instance, tulips and other flowers symbolise resistance and solidarity while making us reflect on the fragility of peace. The presentation reminds us of the current situation in Georgia and the corresponding threat from the Russian Federation.

About Ketuta Alexi-Meskhishvili

Ketuta Alexi-Meskhishvili (born 1979, Tbilisi, Georgia) is a Georgian-American artist who lives in Berlin. In 2025, her works are on view at Kunstverein Braunschweig and Take Ninagawa in Tokyo. She has had solo exhibitions at LC Queisser in Tbilisi, Kunsthalle Basel, Galerie Molitor in Berlin and Kunstverein Cologne, among others.
