Inspiring diversity, threatened ecosystems, and the urgent need to protect

Crises

Humanity currently faces two major interconnected challenges: the biodiversity crisis and the climate crisis. Both are deeply linked and largely driven by human activities such as land-use change, pollution, overexploitation of natural resources, and green house gas emissions. It is estimated that around one third of all plant species are threatened with extinction as a result of these combined pressures. The ongoing loss, and in some cases extinction, of Earth’s unique biological diversity is both alarming and disheartening.

Biodiversity

Yet biodiversity is also one of the planet’s greatest sources of wonder. The vast range of colours, shapes, sizes, and life strategies seen across species reflects millions of years of evolution and adaptation. This diversity is not only something to admire but also something to protect. The urgency of the biodiversity and climate crises demands action, and effective conservation depends on understanding, valuing, and drawing inspiration from the richness of life on Earth.

Experience

Over the past six years, the museum's director, Dr. James Byng, has travelled to 50 countries to document and photograph over 400 flowering plant families. This exhibition shares some of his experiences, plant highlights and images.
