Rumour about Freedom

In the exhibition Rumour about Freedom, the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam presents recent acquisitions, collected since Anne de Haij took up her post as director.

New Acquisitions

An androgynous wood nymph gazes at the visitor from a mysterious painting by Felix de Rooy. On a metre-long canvas by Raafat Ballan, a peaceful demonstration is taking place, whilst in Jan Wolkers’ work, 99 white cork spheres appear to be bursting from a bright orange surface. A ‘spider’s web’ of sensual red tights and glass spheres by Madeleine Berkhemer hangs from the ceiling, and a metronome by Wim T. Schippers ticks imperturbably, ‘Ting Boom’. The works reflect a ‘rumour about freedom’: the longing to be truly free – in art, and beyond.
