The most important city of Drenthe

Coevorden used to be one of the most important fortified cities in the Netherlands. Because of its strategic position on a sandbank in the middle of the marshes, the city was an important stop on the road between Münster and Groningen. Here, cattle and soldiers could cross the river. The name Coevorden is derived from koe voorden, or ‘cow fords’. Fords are shallow water crossings where people could cross with their cows.
