Portrait of Margaretha Bas (1608-1678) by Jacob Adriaensz. Backer, 1642/1643
Margaretha is reunited in Museum Van Loon with her family members
Margaretha Bas married Willem van Loon around 1637; together they form the couple depicted in the large marriage portrait by Jan Miense Molenaer in the entrance hall of the museum. Margaretha and Willem had both been married before but lost their partner at a young age. Willem had a son from his first marriage, Jan van Loon, and Margaretha and he had four more children together. They went to live in Amsterdam after their marriage.
The portrait dating from 1642/1643 was recently restored and is on long-term loan from the Cultural Heritage Agency. This is also the first time that the painter Backer is represented in the portrait gallery of Museum Van Loon.
