Jeroen Hermkens

From 5 December 2026, Museum De Wieger in Deurne will be dedicated to the artist Jeroen Hermkens (St-Anthonis, 1960). On display will be not only his own work, but also many pieces from his private collection, by artists who are dear to him.

Exhibition

The result is a spectacular exhibition, spanning eras and artistic movements, featuring paintings, lithographs, drawings and sculptures by artists including Hermkens, Piranesi, Bonnard, Kokoschka, Corinth, Picasso, Bieruma Oosting and many others.

Great predecessors

The foundation of Hermkens’ work lies in drawing from observation. Using a reed pen and Indian ink, the artist captures the world around him with a sure hand. In doing so, he follows in the footsteps of the great Expressionists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Lovis Corinth, Max Beckmann and Oskar Kokoschka. He also collects works by these artists, a selection of which is on display at De Wieger.

Paris

A stay in Paris had a major influence on his way of working. In Jacques de Champfleury’s lithographic studio, he learnt the technique of painting directly with ink on the lithographic stone. The French artists Pierre Bonnard and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec also worked with this surprising, painterly technique. Works by them form part of the exhibition. Read more on the museum’s website.
