Museum de Kantfabriek shows how the textile industry became the bedrock for economic prosperity in northern Limburg. Machinery rattles away in a factory that evokes the atmosphere of the 1930s.

Textile industry

Museum de Kantfabriek shows how the textile industry became the bedrock for economic prosperity in northern Limburg. Due to the poor quality of soil in northern Limburg, this was an area historically used for sheep farming. That not only provided fertilization, but wool from the sheep was spun and woven into fabric during the winter months. Nowhere else in the Netherlands was there such a highly concentrated cottage industry of home weavers. This cottage industry created some stunning specimens of textile art.
