“I’m going on a trip, and I’m taking with me…” — not just a game, but a real question for those who set sail for the United States at the start of the 20th century. During a fashion show with replica outfits, art historian Birthe Weijkamp offers a glimpse into their elegant wardrobes.

Experience the enchantment

What someone’s wardrobe looked like depended on age, wealth, and gender. These class differences were also reflected in the outfits worn aboard the Titanic — from stylish suits, feathered hats, and elegant eveningwear for the elite to practical blouses, caps, and work aprons for third-class passengers. The fashion show not only reveals the style of the era around 1912 but also mirrors society at the end of the rapidly changing Belle Époque.

Birthe Weijkamp

Birthe Weijkamp is an art historian and fashion history lecturer. In addition to giving lectures and conducting research, she focuses on other forms of education, such as living history. She regularly organizes historical fashion shows where models bring the clothing of the past to life in historically accurate replicas. The models come from diverse backgrounds, all sharing a passion for historical fashion and often making their own costumes.
