Migration, family and memory

Widline Cadet left Haiti for New York when she was 10 to reconnect with her mother and research her family's history. To add to her small family archive, she turned the camera on herself and the people around her. Cadet's photography focuses on themes of migration, family and memory, with the subjects in her images referencing her past. Cadet's work often includes 'body doubles', which highlight the photographic process and encourage the viewer to actively look and question their own perceptions. At Huis Marseille, Cadet combines photographs from family archives with her own into one archive in which different generations and time layers coexist.

###Take This with You ### The title Take This with You / Pran sa avèk ou refers to her personal experience of moving between Haiti and the United States. The phrase came to her mind as a child when she was preparing to move to the United States. As an adult, it reminds her of what to take with her when travelling between the two countries. It also refers to the tangible nature of photography as a process that transforms objects things into something you can easily carry with you. Thus, in times of loss, photographs can connect people who are far apart in space or time.
