The temporary exhibition In De Loop Der Tijd: Roots of Beveland Traditions offers a fascinating look at how our traditions evolve over time, with a focus on traditional costumes, hats, painting and folk tales.

Traditional costume

Traditional costume, for example, is not static; it develops from the 18th-century civic dress and takes on a character of its own in different regions. We also see how decorations on buildings, which were once intended to deter witches, have turned into lightning rods, and how nature spirits have evolved into warnings for mischievous children.

Evolution

The exhibition offers a beautiful overview of the evolution of traditional costumes, with special attention to Noord-Beveland. The changes in pregnancy are further highlighted by paintings by Marinus Zwigtman and Karel Kramer, some of which were temporarily taken out of private ownership. We learn about the family tradition of painting and get to know village types and their clothes in Wissenkerke around 1850 through sketches by Karel's son.

Folktales

Folktales are an indispensable part of our customs. Take, for example, the story of Jan Haak, which warns children about the danger of deep water: earlier it was a feared water monster, and even longer ago a nature spirit. The Green Man, a figure with a rich history, is also highlighted. Originally a pagan symbol that transformed into a Christian sign of rebirth within the monastic tradition.

Contemporary

In the exhibition, the museum presents contemporary visual art by Anneke Nonnekes and Wim Bakker, who proudly carries his origins from the Beveland family of painters, starting with Karel Kramer. Wim's modern interpretation of the Green Man fits perfectly with the theme of this inspiring exhibition.
