Allied soldiers plundered a lot in German cities. A British soldier stole this tableware from a house in Cleves during the Rhineland Offensive. He gave it to the mother of a Nijmegen girl with whom he had fallen in love. She did not want a gift that had been stolen from German citizens and the tableware disappeared into a cupboard for almost 70 years.
