Mon Repos — Photographs by Arthur and Willy Klep

Until 30 August from 11:00 to 17:00

Exhibition

A couple, a camera and an exceptional eye for detail. In Mon Repos, cinematic family photographs offer an intimate glimpse into the life of the enterprising Klep family. Between 1905 and 1915, the couple produced hundreds of glass negatives.

Camera

The couple, Arthur Klep and Willy Klep–van den Biesen, created numerous remarkable images. They paid close attention to lighting, setting, composition and staging. As a result, their photographs are strikingly natural and cinematic. Even children and animals were captured at exactly the right moment.

Direction

Nowadays, taking a photograph is effortless, but at the start of the 20th century, things were different. A great deal of time went into taking, developing and printing the photographs. Arthur and Willy’s photographs were conceived and created with skill and a great deal of patience.

Photography

Technological developments and rising prosperity meant that photography became a hobby. Around 1890, Kodak’s first handheld camera came onto the market. It became easier to take photographs in and around the home, and the camera could be taken along on holidays and outings. A photographic laboratory would develop the glass negatives and produce prints.
