Women of the Rijksmuseum

Until 31 March from 09:00 to 17:00

Activity

Rachel Ruysch, Judith Leyster, Thérèse Schwartze. At the Rijksmuseum, women are everywhere. This month, we bring them to the forefront. Join a guided tour, take part in a workshop, and discover more about the remarkable women of Dutch (art) history.

Centre stage

The Rijksmuseum’s collection is full of stories by and about women. Throughout March these stories take centre stage.

For example: Did you know that Maria van Reigersbergh, devised her husband Hugo de Groots ingenious escape plan? Or that the painter Rachel Ruysch once earned between 750 and 1200 guilders for her work. More than Rembrandt, who rarely made more than 500 guilders?

Programme

In March you can:

  • Join a talk with authors and scholars Janina Ramirez and Jacqueline Klooster about women in history and mythology

  • Take part in a figure-drawing workshop in the museum’s Main Hall
(every Saturday and Sunday between 12 and 15h)

  • Download the Rijksmuseum app and listen to the Women in art and history audio tour

About women of the Rijksmuseum

Women have always played a crucial role in art and history, yet their stories have too often remained unseen. This has led to a distorted picture of (art) history. The Women of the Rijksmuseum working group is dedicated to strengthening the visibility of women in cultural history through research, education, publications and acquisitions.

In 2021, this work resulted in the first presentation of artworks by women artists in the Gallery of Honour.

Made possible by

This programme is made possible in part by the Women of the Rijksmuseum Fund.
