The National Lifeboat Museum Dorus Rijkers is all about crashing waves and stranded ships. Here you can experience what storm force 10 really feels like. In the ship simulator, you can take a trip on a boat on the wild sea. Ever tried to send a message in Morse code?

At the National Lifeboat Museum Dorus Rijkers, learn all there is to know about sea rescuers in the Netherlands, past and present. Take part in a rescue and be entranced by the exciting stories of brave rescuers and their legendary feats. Dorus Rijkers was one of the most famous rescuers in Dutch history.

There’s plenty to see and do at the museum. Aside from the wind tunnel and the ship simulator, you can learn flag semaphore, rescue someone yourself in the heroes’ game and launch a lifeline at a ship. You can even board a real lifeboat.

A museum for young and old alike

The Lifeboat Museum isn’t just fun for children: young and old alike enjoy the models, instruments, and authentic black-and-white films. The museum covers rescuers, extraordinary rescues, lifeboats, the Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution, the Reddingsbrigade (Dutch lifeguard association), the Netherlands Coastguard, ship communications and much more. A free audio tour is available to guide you through the museum.

Museum ships

Six stunning, seaworthy ships are moored at the pier in front of the museum, and are often used for boat trips. You can often take a tour on board. Check with the desk when you visit.
