In 1506, nobleman Hessel van Martena built a city castle in the center of Franeker. The Museum Martena is now dedicated to the history of Franeker. It also hosts temporary exhibitions on Friesland.

Museum Martena illustrates the diverse history of Franeker. The permanent exhibition addresses the University of Franeker, as well the 17h-century female scholar Anna Maria van Schurman. The temporary exhibitions are usually on contemporary Frisian art.

Times past

The paintings and porcelain rooms exude the atmosphere of times past. The oldest known Renaissance cabinet in the Netherlands is on display in the Franeker room. Mechanical masterpieces by Jan Elzinga and Jacob Kooistra are on display in a separate room in the attic.
