Ter Apel Monastery is located on a forested sandy ridge along the ancient trade route from Münster to Groningen. The monastery hosts interesting temporary exhibitions, has a magnificent garden and has been a meeting place for centuries.

This gem of cultural history is unique in northwestern Europe, located in beautiful Westerwolde: former monastery of the Holy Cross, Domus Novae Lucis (the ‘House of the New Light’) dating from 1465. It is the only existing medieval rural monastery in the province of Groningen, and is situated in a 200-hectare forest with a wide range of cycling and walking opportunities.

Included in the list of ‘top 100’ Dutch historic sites registered with UNESCO, Ter Apel Monastery Museum hosts interesting temporary exhibitions, has a magnificent garden with more than 200 different plants, is an elegant wedding location and has a comfortable Monastery café and a Monastery shop selling a surprising range of products.
