In 2021, Museum Kasteel Wijchen received a special object. It concerns the remains of a heavy pole with an iron pole shoe from the second half of the 17th century.
Find in cellar Wijchen Castle
Kasteel Wijchen was renovated in the 1990s. In the basement they were working to build a lift and toilet block. There the pole with an iron pole shoe was found. The overseer of the renovation ‘saved’ this pole, because there was no archaeological guidance during that type of work at that time.
Second half 17th century
The municipality has had this piece of history investigated by an archaeological bureau. They have discovered that the pole comes from the second half of the 17th century. They also preserved the pole. This special find contributes to the story of the history of the residents of Kasteel Wijchen. The newly excavated 14th century wall, the 17th century well and this special pole and pole shoe make the puzzle about the history of the castle more and more complete.
