Defenses in the Zeeland landscape During the Eighty Years’ War, hundreds of forts, dikes and lines were built in Zeelandic Flanders. A large number are still visible in the landscape. Museum Het Bolwerk shows how the inhabitants of the border region defended themselves against enemy attacks over the course of centuries. The focus of the collection is on the State-Spanish Lines, a unique cluster of defenses. These are unique because they comprise a part of the foundational history of the Netherlands and are both visible and tangible in the landscape.
