Discover the rich mercantile history of Zeeland in the Netherlands’ only belfry: Museum Het Belfort in Sluis.

Sluis started to develop around the end of the 13th century. Sluis used to be an important port city, especially in the days when it was ruled by the Dukes of Burgundy. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Sluis was one of the Netherlands’ most important fortified cities. Today, it is a popular tourist destination.

An interactive presentation

Upstairs, the history of Sluis is told interactively through films, objects and images. Visit the council hall basement, council chamber and the mayor’s room, climb the tower and get to know the most famous and most consulted inhabitant of Sluis, teacher and archivist Johan Hendrik Van Dale, who produced the authoritative dictionary of the Dutch language.
