In the museum you can discover the history of Holland's oldest city

Behind a 16th-century façade at Markt 46, you will find Museum De Roos. Learn about one of the first places to be granted city rights in the Netherlands, in 1213.

Old fortified city

Museum De Roost is largely devoted to the history of Geertruidenberg – the first place to receive city rights in the Netherlands, in 1213. Prints, scale models and charters show the development of the oldest fortified city of the Netherlands. There is a 14th-century sword on display, and you can learn more about Vice-Admiral Zoutman, the poet Juliana de Lannoy and three famous painters from the Bergen School.
