Cihad Caner: (Re)membering the riots in Afrikaanderwijk

20 September 2024 until 27 April 2025

Exhibition

This activity has ended.

Cihad Caner, an artist from Turkey now living in Rotterdam, explores the political power of images and how they influence the socio-political reality.

Representation

His work – using video, photography, and CGI – critiques the one-sided narratives in the media and focuses on representation, marginalization, and image production. Fictional characters and humor play a significant role in his non-linear, multilingual stories.

Afrikaanderwijk

In his solo exhibition, Cihad delves into the forgotten riots of 1972 in the Afrikaanderwijk, in which guest workers were targeted. He explores how memories, collective memory, and reenactment contribute to processing this past.

First Double 1 & 2

Cihad’s exhibition is part of First Double 1 & 2, where five artists explore themes such as spiritual technologies, land issues, and the remembrance of history. Other participants include Jabu Arnell, Luana Vitra, and Nolan Oswald Dennis.
