What are casemates? Casemates are a kind of bunker. You can see them for yourself when driving across the Afsluitdijk, just before reaching Friesland. These are large concrete structures built for defense. Note: For those traveling by car, the address is Afsluitdijk 1c, 8752 TP Kornwerderzand.

What are casemates?

When driving across the Afsluitdijk, you will see large concrete structures at the locks. These are defensive fortifications, or casemates, built in the 1930s. Kornwerderzand was the only place in the Netherlands where the German Blitzkrieg of 1940 was halted. Today, the bunkers make up the Kazemattenmuseum.

Aside from the Blitzkrieg story, the museum illustrates the history of the Afsluitdijk, the 1940 battle at the Wonsstelling and the role of the navy, as well as the Cold War.
