From 3 April to 6 September 2026, the SieboldHuis Japan Museum will be presenting ‘Tokyo Tokyo’, an exhibition by photographer Richard Koek. Fascinated by life in megacities, he turns his lens on the people behind Tokyo’s familiar cityscape.

By approaching the city as part of his own world, Koek uncovers personal, authentic stories that lie hidden behind the familiar clichés. He places cultural icons such as the kimono, sakura and sumo in their everyday context – not to reinforce clichés, but to question them. Tokyo Tokyo invites us to reflect on what feels familiar and how looking closely can deepen our understanding of a city. The result is a vibrant portrait of Tokyo, in which personal stories, cultural traditions and shared humanity come together.
