Huis van het boek (The Book House) is the oldest book museum in the world. The collection includes items from all periods of the history of books in the West. Medieval manuscripts are this museum’s main attraction.

In the Huis van het Boek, everything revolves around books from the past and the present. Four times a year, the museum organizes an exhibition on books both ancient and modern. The permanent exhibition covers the development of script and the layout and decoration of manuscripts. The exquisitely preserved 19th century library also includes examples of some of the earliest printed books, the incunables.

The history of books

Huis van het Boek is a museum on the history and design of books. In the digital age, it is especially important to look back and learn where books came from. Equally important, however, is to reflect on how books will influence our future.

Scriptorium

There’s something fun to do for all ages. Children can find hands-on activities at the scriptorium or the printing press. Schools and educational institutions are welcome. The museum organizes various active school programs on the history of the book.
