On April 1, 1572, the ‘Watergeuzen’, or Sea Beggars, captured the city of Brielle from the Spanish. Discover the Eighty Years’ War at Historisch Museum Den Briel through stories about naval battles and a treasure trove of history.

‘Op 1 april verloor Alva zijn bril’ is a well-known Dutch saying, referring to the capture of Den Briel by the Sea Beggars from the Spanish in 1572.

See, hear and experience this and more at Historisch Museum Den Briel. The servants of Johan van Oldenbarnevelt and Maurice of Orange tell stories about their masters. The weigh house shows you the celebrations of April 1, 1572. The museum also houses exhibitions on Brielle-born sailors like Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp. The exhibits on the ground floor are a treasure trove of history.
