Sneaker Evolution offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the future of footwear and our role in the circular economy. Discover the sneaker as fashion item and as symbol of innovation and social change.

Sneakers

Sneakers are today an undeniable part of our daily lives, worn by everyone from young people to adults, from streetwear to high fashion. But behind this everyday shoe lies a world of innovations, technologies and social changes. The exhibition takes you on a journey through the hidden world behind your sneakers.

A continuous evolution

Sneaker Evolution explores the development of the sneaker, from the invention of the vulcanized rubber sole in the 19th century to modern innovations like 3D printing and upcycling. The exhibition displays one hundred and fifty iconic sneakers, from the Converse All Star and Nike Air Max to the Puma Speedcat and the ON Spraylight. These sneakers illustrate not only the technological breakthroughs that have shaped the evolution of the sneaker, but also how these innovations have influenced athletic performance. At the same time, they highlight the cultural aspect of the sneaker, from hip-hop to fashion. The sneaker is more than a shoe; it is a symbol of identity, connection and social change.

Innovation and sustainability

The exhibition's focus lies on innovation and sustainability. You explore developments in materials - think biodegradable or circular raw materials - and innovative production methods. On the second floor you dive into the history of the sneaker, the influence of the designer 'behind it', the personal stories of sneakerheads and how sneakers connect subcultures. Downstairs in the Atrium it's all about the future: from repairing and upcycling worn sneakers to designing with AI and producing with robots. There you see designers at work and reflect on the footprint and lifecycle of sneakers.
