This activity has ended.

From September 21 on track in the Depot: Art Frames. Discover the stories behind eight painting-frame combinations from the collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. What makes the frame so special?

Paintings

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen holds around six hundred paintings from the period 1780–1914 (also known as the long nineteenth century). They were primarily created by Dutch and French artists for an art market that was becoming increasingly commercial.

Research

Since 2020, the museum has been researching how the frames of these works were made. Hundreds of paintings have been examined and photographed from all angles, and archival research has been conducted. Through this, the museum has gained more insight into framing practices. Like the paintings, the frames often have a rich history: some were chosen by the artist, others by a dealer, collector, or museum director.

What and where

On display in the corridors near the restoration studios (2nd floor), Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen highlights eight paintings by artists such as Anna Abrahams, Théodore Rousseau, and Paul Gauguin. What story do the painting and frame have to tell?
