History comes to life at the Elisabeth Orphanage Museum! Discover how orphans in Culemborg lived 400 years ago. Come along and discover how being a child today differs from being a child in the past.

700 orphans

For 4 centuries, the Elisabeth Orphanage was home to around 700 orphans. Children that had lost their parents were brought to the stately orphanage in the city of Culemborg – a whole new world for them. Today the building houses a family museum and garden where you can experience what life was like in those days. Have fun exploring the authentic orphanage kitchen, the dining room, the historic cellar, spinning room, dormitory, play area in the attic and the garden.

Activities for children

There’s always plenty to do in the orphanage. Help Kaat the kitchen maid do the laundry or churn butter. Harvest vegetables in the garden and play the garden game in the hedge maze. The attic offers a nice play area, and there are fun and tasty activities related to the theme year on food: ‘Enough for an entire orphanage!’.
