The museum of big questions

The Main Building (het Groote Museum) is the first and most impressive ARTIS building. It is on the first plot of land ever owned by ARTIS: the buiten-Middenhof. This land was bought by ARTIS founders Westerman, Werlemann and Wijsmuller, known as the 3 Ws, in 1838.

The Groote Museum takes you on a personal expedition, with your body as the starting point. It’s like staring into a mirror and discovering more and more. Like similarities to plants, other animals and even microbes. You then start to see cross-connections. Your intestines are not so different from the roots of a tree, for example. And when you were crawling as an infant, you moved just like a crocodile. Recognizing these similarities makes you see yourself and the world around you in a different light. You realize how intertwined you are with all living things, down to the smallest fiber of your being. And that you are much less independent than you thought.
