In 2025, the Mauritshuis commemorates the liberation of the Netherlands, eighty years ago. The exhibition House in the Storm – A Museum in Wartime takes you back to the Mauritshuis during the period 1940-45 through historical objects, photographs, film and audio clips, and paintings.

In the Lion’s Den

The Mauritshuis was located right in the political power center of the Nazis: all major organizations of the German administration were literally just around the corner.

It was a turbulent time: the art collection was placed in storage, propaganda exhibitions were held, clandestine music performances took place, and there were individuals in hiding to avoid forced labor (Arbeitseinsatz). At the same time, starting in 1942, the Mauritshuis also became a true home for the family of operations manager Mense de Groot, who lived with his family in the museum’s basement.

Personal Stories

Through personal stories, including those of museum director Wilhelm Martin, Mense de Groot, and his son Menno, themes such as (un)freedom, oppression, art protection, and National Socialist cultural politics are explored. Menno’s memories and experiences are incorporated into the exhibition, specifically aimed at engaging young museum visitors.
