Queer City Tours: General Idea in Amsterdam

As part of General Idea, the Stedelijk Museum is organising city walks twice a week about queer positions in Amsterdam over the course of the exhibition. Artist AA Bronson has had a warm relationship with the city since the 1980s. In 1979, General Idea's first museum exhibition was organised here. Around that time, the collective moved into an artist residency at the Stedelijk Museum on Prinseneiland. They made many friends and became inspired the local queer and artist community. On this walk, we will visit key sites from the 1980s and today. How has the city changed? What is the role of pubs and nightclubs in the creation and survival of a community? And what position do LGBT+ people occupy today?

Starting Point

The city walk starts at the HIV/Aids monument behind Central Station. You walk along the Warmoesstraat, past the Palace on Dam Square to the Stedelijk Museum. After the walk, you’ll have a chance to visit the General Idea exhibition, which is included with your ticket.
