Lecture

This activity has ended.

What connects a 1970s photographer to the Photo League? Henry Horenstein himself tells it during the Artist Talk. The American photographer talks to gallery owner Addie Elliott about his work and the influence of the Photo League on his photographic practice.

Henry Horenstein

Henry Horenstein (1947) is a Jewish-American photographer and professor at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he also studied. Trained as a historian and shaped by documentary tradition, he focuses his lens on fringe groups, the working class and other under-exposed communities. Themes such as heritage and storytelling run like a common thread through his oeuvre, including the early series Close Relations, an intimate look at the life of a Jewish middle-class family and their social circle in the 1970s.

Elliott Gallery

Addie Elliott is a gallery owner and curator. She previously worked as a curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and is the founder of the Elliott Gallery, the first commercial photo gallery of its kind in Amsterdam. By now, the gallery stands as a leading authority within European fine art and documentary photography.
