Lecture

This activity has ended.

Huis Marseille has invites its curator Sonia Voss to throw her light on the eighty fascinating black and white photographs she selected from the monumental archive of this Japanese photographer. She will be sharing her knowledge along with background stories in a one-hour lecture.

Water

From the mid-1950s onwards, Kusukazu Uraguchi (1922-1988) pointed his camera at the ama, a women's community of Japanese fishermen and divers in the Shima region, where the photographer himself was born. The intimate and powerful photos are a special testimony to their lifestyle and increasingly disappearing profession. The position of the ama within the Japanese imagination, their sensual bond with the water and their fearlessness and sovereignty have been a source of inspiration for poets and artists for many centuries. The exhibition was first shown in 2024 during the international photo festival Les Rencontres d'Arles and has been supplemented in Huis Marseille with additional photos, a new video compilation and recently restored vintage wooden panels.
